Rosewood writing slope

Not in stock

Grain figuring does not come any better then this.

It is box in with broad bands of Kingwood, the veneers are perfect.

The box is made from exotic and very expensive Rosewood with it's decorative graining and attractive rich colouring. The top is beautifully inlaid with pewter stringing including a central plaque acting as a cartouche, which could be engraved if desired.

It has two ink wells very much of that age.

I would think the lock is a replacement, it is French and the box is English.

Measures: 14x9x5 ins ; 35 cm x 22,5 cm x 12,5 cm

Weighs: 3kg

These little artworks had a privileged location on the best english homes during the XIX century, accompanied the nobles on their journeys and the senior offices in their campaigns. They were extremely useful and also a sign of distinction.

Take this opportunity. The current global economic situation has made this type of works have a bargain price when valuing the wood they are made of, their age and their perfect finish. But this situation will no longer last as probably soon  these works will reach again the prices they used to have.

Mid 1800’s large campaign style rosewood writing box in fine condition.

Circa 1840

As the 19th century progressed the boxes tended to be veneered with walnut rather than rosewood and the degree of brassware to the exterior became less. Often the brass straps would stop at the back edge of the lid and the amount of corner pieces became less. This particular example features four corner pieces to each vertical and straps that extend down the full depth of the back…..more in keeping with the original design. Attractive grain. Unspoilt patina. No missing or replaced veneer.

All corners and straps original and firmly fixed. Top closes square and true on the original hinges. Original twin sliding slope clasps and triple catch lock complete with a later working key. Office section comprising of dished pen tray with storage space beneath, small lidded section, wafer slope and twin inkwell sections with a matching pair of replacement inkwells in perfect condition.

Both storage sections beneath the writing platform are in very clean condition. Three secret drawers accessed by raising the divider between the inkwell and wafer slope sections. The mechanism works well with the concealing panel springing open nicely. Additional security is provided for the near side storage section and the secret drawers by way of an additional original lock to the slope surface.

A working key is supplied. The box had been treated to a replacement leather slope surface with subtle embossed border in spotless condition.

A fine looking box and an excellent example of what is considered to be a ‘classic’ in terms of style.
